Living Mindfully After Nirvana
Nirvana is Going Beyond All Experiences
There is no exact title of each level of jhana (except for the formless realms), but some terms have been used here to help differentiate from one level to the next. As you reach each jhanic level, your mind will be tempted to remain at the previous jhanic state. Simply keep a balanced mind with no clinging to the pleasant or unpleasant and you will progress to the higher levels. The nine levels of jhana are:
- Awareness of Delightful Sensations only
- Awareness of Joy only
- Awareness of Equanimity or Contentment
- Awareness of Utter peacefulness
- Awareness of Infinity of space
- Awareness of Infinity of consciousness
- Awareness of No-thingness
- Awareness of Neither perception nor non-perception.
(from Anguttara Nikaya 9.36) the total overcoming of the sphere of nothingness he reaches the sphere of neither-perception- nor- non- perception and abides therein.
There is no such thing as experience here. You seem to know. You imagine. Imagination must come to an end. I don't know how to put it. Spiritual experiences are, he says, like any other experiences only more glorified. They do not solve the problems of duality or suffering. All those religious experiences are no different from the experiences people have when they take drugs.(UG)
